Wide open

4x8 Stock Trailer - $650 (TX)
"4x8" Stock Trailer, New Treated Floor, New Paint, New Lights and Wiring, 2 good size 15 tires, takes 2 inch ball, has bullddog hitch and bulldog swing away jack, double swing open doors, has mount on side to put a spare tire, this trailer is good for small stock.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Looks like a hoof could get caught quite easily on those gates.
Years ago I had my mare moved in an open stock trailer.  It was only a 10 mi trip, but we had to go through town during rush hour.  She was NOT happy!  In fact, she was downright scared with the cars moving right next to her on both sides.  My normally 'not-scared-of-anything' super alpha mare was shaking like a leaf!!   I never put her in one of those again.
...i can't waste all day waiting on you
Stock/Horse Trailer bumper pull 18ft - $600 (TX)
Stock/Horse Trailer, Bumper Pull, double axle, It measures 18ft from the tongue to the end of trailer, the inside measures 15ft from front to end with about 2 and a half foot on the bottom being storage for tack, hay or tools, It is 6ft wide and about 6 and 1/2ft to 7ft on inside height it has a center dividing gate and two sliding gates at the rear, it has a 2 inch coupler bulldog hitch and a bulldog jack. This trailer needs alot of work it needs a floor and needs welding done to it and new wiring It has "NO TITLE" You would have to get this trailer registered as a homemade trailer/farm use, I know every county is different but all my trailers i just tell them i have a homemade trailer and they give you farm tags for it, it is to be used for farm use it's a homemade horse trailer anyway, You need to know welding and how to put a floor in it because it needs a lot of work. So if you think you might want this trailer bring you some farm tags off one of your trailers at your house because i don't currently have it registered it dosen't have a plate. I bought this trailer to fix it up and use to haul my horse and cows and i have alot going on right now and don't have the time it requires to work on it. ( It's a Project!) Also this trailer has a covered top. "PLEASE LEAVE ME YOUR PHONE NUMBER" I WILL START CALLING PEOPLE BACK TODAY AFTER 1:00PM IF THE TRAILER IS STILL ON HERE THEN I STILL HAVE IT. I've tryed to cover as much as possible, "Serious Inquirers Only" that means if you tell me your coming be shure of it because i can't waste all day waiting on you. Thank You, Happy Holidays
Looks like it has a sunshade in the front window.
Hitch Safe
Here is a neat idea!  A great place to put your key or $$ while you are out riding.
From the website:
Converts hitch receiver into a VAULT! Two hitch pins secure vault portion from INSIDE the receiver. The only way vault can be removed is when the 10,000 combination drawer is removed. The drawer holds spare keys and even drivers license and credit cards! Great for outdoor sports when carrying these items are a hassle or can become lost. Dust cover protects and conceals.
NEVER be locked out again!  $69.95
Another Trade, Another "Exposed"
TWO HORSES FOR FOUR HORSE TRAILER - $1500
we have listed here a very well mannered and broke to ride for a semi exp person mustang mare, she is great on trails and roads, have done alot of extensive ground manners with her and listens and responds very nicely. her only fault at this point is that she is bred and they did not inform us of that when we bought her. anyways she is 15.2 hands and we are ridding her western pleasure, she will stand,tie,bath,clip,trailer,stand for farrier, and does not spook at all. gets along great with my other mares also in pastures. we are seeking a forever home for her. yea she is a mustang but she is broke to dealth we want someone with exp to buy her and that has ridden mustangs or has some knowledge of this breed, we have limited experience with these horses and want the right person to take care of her like we have been doing. she has been ridden bareback also and rode in the woods and around traffic and lakes and has performed fantastic. and if shes bred you get a baby also for the price. everything up to date and shes ready for all your upcomming ridding needs. asking $1.500 o.b.o. i also want to throw in a one year old arabien stud non reg, (moving) i am in need of a four horse bumperpull trailer in decent shape.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Her only fault??? Since when is pregnancy a fault??  And what does 'broke to dealth' really mean?

I like how they throw in the one year old stud  (stud??? - is he breeding already?) at the end of the ad - so you get THREE for the price of one.  Great.

Not too tall, not too long - would that be a pony?

small animal trailer - $425 (NC)

She will be well worth someones time, very smooth gait. Trained with Clinton Anderson's natural horsemanship only. Was exposed to a mustang stallion once ~3 months back. Will load on a trailer but needs a little coaxing- Comes off trailer easy though. downsizing and would like a forever home for her. Will trade for horse hay!!!!!!!!!!!!

That mare desperately needs groceries and an upgrade - especially if she is PG!

Nothing like putting helmetless kids on a greenbroke horse that still bucks and crowhops.

Normally I do not put contact information for the trailers for sale.  This one is an exception because it is one of the things to look for when you are trying to determine if it is a scammer.

Having been looking at horse trailers for quite some time now, there are a couple of things that pop out immediately that show that this is a scammer:
  • Price - the odd number - scammers like to put odd prices on their stuff.  Legitimate sellers would have put $2,500 (yes, there are exceptions, but they are usually on the 'cheap' trailers - see Sept 29 posting)
  • Price - the actual number.  If it sounds too good to be true - IT IS.  Do some research - here is a similar trailer on HTW for $11,200 http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/home/trailerdetail.asp?ID=230966
  • The strange contact information.  They never put a phone number and the email is always with a free service like yahoo or gmail or hotmail.
Additional things to look for:
  • The seller will try to assure you it is a safe deal by telling you that they are using eBay as an agent - don't fall for it.  The trailer is never available to see (but you get the eBay 7 day return guarantee if you don't like it after they deliver it to your house for FREE!!) and they always want a money order up front.  Others want you to use an escrow account - all the while claiming it is for your protection.
  • The military sympathy scam - they  tell you they have to sell it because they are being sent back to Iraq/Afghanistan.
  • The ad is listed all over the country.
  • Look closely at the pictures - somewhere out there someone is legitimately trying to sell their trailer for a fair price - their ad and pictures got hijacked.

Do your homework.  Check out this thread on Horse Trailer World: http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/forum/thread-view.asp?threadid=7153&posts=42

It has good information on what to look for.

Yeah - I'd like to get a 2010 4H 10' LQ with slideouts for $5,787 too, but it is not going to happen!!

1964 Roy Barnes Design

$1,795 (NE)
Roy D. Barnes 2 Horse Bumper Pull Trailer. Straight load with center divider, mats and front saddle compartment. This trailer is in excellent structural condition.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Those older designs really did not have much visibility for the horse!!!
This model was called the 'cadillac' of horse trailers as well as the 'corvette' of horse trailers - quite a range from luxury to speed!
With the forward slanting rear and no doors to close, rain and snow can easily get in.
Still a neat design though.
A New Project
I just bought this for $400. Tires are fine... if only i could teach my horse to straddle the outsides of the frame!!! Hope to fix it up... we'll see :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

These trailer pictures were sent to me by Melissa.  She is going to be taking on the challenge of a 'project' trailer.  I really enjoy seing these projects when they are finished.

Someone once told me that projects (of any type) usually take twice as long and cost three times as much as was budgeted - or was that three times as long and twice as much?  LOL

I wish you the best of luck with your trailer, Melissa, and I look forward to updates as you progress.  I am sure that my readers would enjoy it as well.  Thanks for sharing.

Balls

My New Truck

I just got a new (to me) truck - yay me!!!!  It is in great condition and is set up for either a GN or bumper pull trailer.  Sweet!  The guy kept the bumper hitch ball mount to use on his new truck, so I went about buying a new one.

Oh my.

I had no idea that there was such a variety of balls out there.  Black ones, white ones, shiny chrome ones, and even ones specially colored to match your truck.  The last time I borrowed a ball it was rusty from being out in the weather with no protection!  There are a variety of sizes too.

While the color selection was an easy one, the part that got me somewhat perplexed was the selection of sizes combined with the drop and rise!  I started to grab the one that had THREE different ball sizes, but realized that model had no drop or rise.  What's a girl to do?

So I went home and started to do some research.  It is worse than I could have ever imagined.  If your receiver is too big, you can buy a reducer sleeve; if your ball is too small you can buy a reducer bushing; and if the person driving the vehicle is too aggressive you can get a bumper guard to protect you from impact; if your shank is too short you can buy an extension or if it is too small you can buy an adaptor; your balls can be reversible, adjustable or solid and can be either screwed on or welded on.
You can get ball washers and heat treated balls; ball storage racks and ball covers.  You can even get a ball storage bag for when you are not using them and want to protect them even more.

Now if I were only going to pull one specific trailer on this truck and nothing else, it would be a relatively simple task.  I would measure the required ball size, see where the trailer is level to get the correct drop/rise and be done.

However, I will be pulling multiple trailers.  With different loads.  The drop and rise are mostly critical on dual/triple axle trailers because you want to make sure that the weight is evenly distributed on all the axles.  A single axle trailer does not have that issue; however, if you have any livestock in it you want it to be as close to level as possible.  Also, if you are too high in the front, you can easily drag the back of the trailer on the road especially if you are pulling out of a parking lot and the ground is really uneven.   Same thing if the front is too low - the front of the trailer can easily ram into the ground if the surface is sharply angled.  Think sharply sloped railroad tracks and going down under small bridges.

Looking at the prices of some of these I can understand why the receiver/ball locks are popular.  Some of the ones I have found (so far) easily cost over $250.  It's no wonder they get stolen so frequently!

I will do some more research and post about the different options and how to select the proper one for your trailering needs.  If there is anything in particular you would like me to research regarding this topic let me know.  :-)
