I hope the surgery is successful - and they have other means of equine transportation!!
If they are genuine, then this is heart breaking. If I had the money (and lived near them), I would say, "I will buy this trailer from you, and when you have the money later on to buy it back, I will sell it to you for the same price." That way I would have helped them and not lost any cash in the process. If they never bought it back, I would have a nice trailer to keep or sell.
